CPM Calculator
A CPM calculator finds the cost per thousand impressions of an ad campaign by dividing total cost by impressions and multiplying by 1,000. This tool also works out total cost from a CPM rate, or how many impressions a budget buys. Add clicks and conversions to see click-through rate, effective cost per click, and cost per acquisition.

CPM stands for cost per mille, from the Latin for thousand. Google Ads describes CPM bidding as paying for every 1,000 times an ad is shown, and the cost per mille entry covers its use across ad networks. Publishers use the same formula to report eCPM, which is revenue per 1,000 impressions.
Worked Example
A display campaign costs $2,500 and delivers 400,000 impressions. CPM is $2,500 ÷ 400,000 × 1,000 = $6.25.
The campaign earned 3,200 clicks, a 0.80% click-through rate. Each click effectively cost $0.78. Of those clicks, 96 converted, so cost per acquisition is about $26.04 and the conversion rate is 3.00%.
CPM Versus CPC and CPA
CPM pricing charges for reach, so the advertiser carries the risk that people see the ad and do not click. Cost-per-click pricing charges only for clicks, and cost-per-acquisition pricing charges only for conversions.
Converting CPM into an effective CPC makes the options comparable. If a CPM campaign works out to $0.78 per click and a search campaign charges $1.50 per click for similar visitors, the CPM buy is cheaper per click. Conversion quality still matters, so compare cost per acquisition when you can. Marketing teams that track these figures across channels often pull them into the AI tools for marketing they already use for reporting.
What Changes CPM
- Audience targeting. Narrow, high-value audiences cost more per thousand impressions.
- Placement and format. Video and premium placements usually carry higher CPMs than standard display.
- Season and competition. Prices rise when more advertisers bid for the same audience, such as in the fourth quarter.
- Viewability. Some buys charge only for viewable impressions, which raises the stated CPM but removes unseen ads.
Teams comparing ad platforms often weigh these costs alongside their CRM choice, because attribution depends on clean data. Stack Row's HubSpot versus Salesforce comparison covers how each platform reports campaign results.
Methodology and Limitations
- The calculator applies the standard CPM, CTR, CPC, and CPA formulas shown above.
- Impressions are counted as reported by your ad platform. Platforms define impressions and viewability differently.
- Results are rounded for display; calculations keep full precision.
- Currency selection changes the displayed symbol only and does not convert values.
- Inputs stay in your browser. A calculation is saved locally after you select Calculate.
Frequently Asked Questions
How Do You Calculate CPM?
Divide the total campaign cost by the number of impressions, then multiply by 1,000. A $2,500 campaign with 400,000 impressions has a $6.25 CPM.
What Is a Good CPM?
It depends on the platform, audience, format, and season. Compare CPM with your own past campaigns and with the cost per click or acquisition it produces, rather than with a single benchmark.
What Is the Difference Between CPM and Effective CPM?
CPM is what an advertiser pays per 1,000 impressions. eCPM is what a publisher earns per 1,000 impressions, calculated with the same formula using revenue instead of cost.
How Many Impressions Does My Budget Buy?
Divide your budget by the CPM and multiply by 1,000. A $1,000 budget at a $5 CPM buys 200,000 impressions.
Is CPM or CPC Better?
CPM suits awareness goals where reach matters. CPC suits goals that depend on visits. Convert CPM into an effective cost per click to compare the two directly.
